Looks a bit like a nice plump magnificus... the curly spines throw me a bit though, and it usually has a few more ribs than that.

thanks CP...maybe it's the way they grow them here....they def do not use the right medium...all cacti bought here in the RP are grown in regular rich humus soil...never seen any with sand, loam,perlite a.s.f. ...cost to much for the growers. Most of the cactui here are originally smuggled into the country from all over the world and then propagated.now that you mention magnificus...I recall someone else mentioned this to me once... maybe when i bought it...don't remember. so we sahll call it what...notocactus magnificus or Parodia magnificus?

I'm not convinced. Its close but might be a different species. I've never seen N. magnificus with red in the centre (I don't have this species, shock horror) and the spines don't look right. Too long and too curly and too dark. I don't have a better suggestion. The small number of ribs suggest something like N. horstii or N. ottonis, I've seen forms similar to this but again not quite right.

The current correct designation is Parodia... but watch this space, it could change (again) in the wink of an eye... As for this plant, it'd be interesting to see it after is't put on some regular not-so-lush growth, I'm hard pressed to find a definite ID, (maybe a hybrid even?)

will check again after the dry season. ..it might look different then

so if i call it 'Parodia magnificus'...would that make sense?will let it grow for a couple of month this coming dry season and we shall lokk at the results later on.TY

Hi,
This is a Notocactus, but not of the Eriocactus group. So it's not Notocactus magnificus (which belongs to the Eriocactus group: yellow pistil, no red one).

The name would be Parodia magnifica (synonym of Notocactus magnificus) except that it isn't that plant.

It is a Parodia, but doesn't seem to match the known species. Maybe your growing conditions are throwing us off, or maybe it is a hybrid.
