| I "rescued" this one from Wal-Mart day before yesterday. It was in pure peat, and had just been soggily watered. I rushed it home and removed all the peat and put it in my coarse mix. I think it is an Opuntia, but which one?

Bill, Sorry I don't know which one it is. But, how would you like a Cylindropuntia imbricata next spring? They are cold hardy to zone 5, looks similar to that one (larger) and has a pretty red/purple flower, I can give you a small one, in the ground it should really take off. Dan
Here is a link that might be useful: Small C. imbricata

It seems to be Austrocylindropuntia cylindrica. Alfonso

Hi, This is a Cylindropuntia, not an Austrocylindropuntia. Pieter

Yes Dan, I'd love one. How big do they get when planted in the ground? Thanks Alfonso and Pieter. Before I posted here on it, I looked up Cylindropunta, because I thought the segments looked like cylinders, hence the name. My search kept directing me to Austrocylindropuntia, which didn't look just right.. Thanks a heap folks!! Bill in SC

Bill, (Austro)cylindropuntia imbricata is very cold-hardy but not so winter-wet-hardy. Over here it won't make it without protection from the rain. I don't know what your new one is, but one of those Opuntioid things! Half of the Cylindropuntia got moved to Austrocylindropuntia and I don't know why and I can't tell the difference :)

Good for you Bill, what a nice looking plant. Dawn

Hey Bill, Around here they get to about 4-5' tall and branch out to almost the same. We have a couple of good examples here in town. Dan

Bill, I saw one very much like that in Home Depot yesterday - labelled as opuntia subuluta monstrose. Jan
