Wow! So that's the way it flowers. I got one of these recently, mine is labelled as M. J. sancarlensis. For Desert Tropicals they're the same plant...

Alessandro, I have M. sancarlensis too. It is a variety of M. johnstonii that has particularly long central spines.

Thanks for the votes of confidence. A new camera and purchase of a tripod means that I can improve on my picture taking. Some more good ones (I think anyway) to come but I'm on holiday mid next week.
