Thelocactus and bud

This thelocactus had this bud for at least a year and a half (since I bought it) and it remained a small low bump on the surface hardly growing in size at all. It has recently grown exponentially and will soon flower.
Perhaps it is the recent change in the light/dark cycles I am treating it to. I went from 12/12 artificial to south facing window (August 2005 to late October 2005) then back to artificial 12/12 for November into December. About a week or two ago I changed the artificial cycle to 10 hr on, 14 hr off.
The bud exploded in growth.
