Caltrans installs fog alert system on 99

FRESNO -- San Joaquin Valley drivers approaching fog will be warned to slow down by a new $12 million system installed by state transportation officials.

Caltrans District 6 Director Malcolm Dougherty said the system monitors drivers' speed and can detect foggy conditions 30 seconds ahead. An electronic sign will warn drivers to reduce speed when they are approaching fog banks.

The 10.5-mile system on Highway 99 in Fresno and Tulare counties includes 33 message signs, 41 microwave sensors, six weather stations and 12 closed-circuit cameras.
