Gardenia Planting

About a month ago, I planted my new gardenia Grand Star in the front yard of my house. It had two lovely white blooms on its well-formed eight-inch tall frame. It's supposed to grow to a height of four feet. No more blooms now. Many yellow leaves though. I know much more about yellowing leaves after reading Garden Web which I joined today. So I have a plan for that. However, before I carry out the plan, can someone please tell me if planting in the ground, versus a pot, was a mistake? Will it survive Fall and Winter out there? It's facing northwest. Wind will be blowing sycamore tree leaves into it. Location is San Francisco Bay Area Peninsula, close to the Airport.
