Transplanting an old tree

carney

I have a flowering cherry tree which has been growing in my yard for nearly 25 years. It is not a big tree. The diameter is no larger than 6 or 7 inches at ground level.

I am thinking of transfering it this winter to one of my son's property. Would it be safe to dig it up this winter after the leaves are all fallen? Can I bare-root it (remove all dirt) in the process of transplanting it? Thanks for any response.
