| Well, another sorry tomato season here in sunny San Francisco!! Think I'm gonna give the dirt a rest until spring and just seed with some low maintenance cover crop. My beds here in Noe Valley are planter boxes installed on the concrete slab, approx 12-18" deep. Suggestions for seedings that will give some color, improve soil, attract bees/butterflies etc. Edible a plus but not necessary. Thanks. |

| Old post. I've only draped large transparent plastic packaging over plants to extend fall heat. Or try leaning used shower doors as open ("leaky") heat accumulators. Especially when plant is young, something shaped like downspout "splash block" might makes watering easier (or use micro irrigation). It might make the difference for tomatoes. Also, 2011 was a cool summer. |
