Black Soot on Gardenia

My gardenia plant, growing in the backyard, is covered with something like tiny black soot from a chimeny. However, as I don't have a chimeny, I guess I can't blame the problem to any chimeny I don't have. None of my immediate nabors has any chimeny either. What is it then that's causing the black soot on the leaves? Can it be some kind of plant disease?

It could be sooty mold, but I'm no expert. You might try posting over in the Discussions area. Not too many posters over here in the off-topic hangout. :)
