Garden Pest Eating our Pepper Plant

Help! I have a garden pest that I have not been able to identify or stop. The attached picture shows a bell pepper plant that is the latest casualty. Before the bell pepper was attacked, the pest ate and killed a basil plant. Whatever it is, is able to devour entire leaves during the night. I think some small dark spots show up before the leaves end up with holes in them. We have tried a fatty acid soap mixture to no avail. There are two plump trees next to our garden that have also been eaten (but to a much less degree). We have seen some slugs and pill bugs, but rarely on the plants. Any help would be much appreciated! Let me know if I can provide any more info.
