First, I don't know a darn thing about birds, but that sure looks like it has owl markings to me.

I thought so too... but it doesn't have the flattened face... BUT the other day, while I was out jogging, I found an IMMENSE feather and was told that it was an owl feather.... maybe the two go together? I hope the little guy survived...

I'm no birding expert but it appears to me to be a juvenile American Kestrel aka "Sparrow Hawk".

Oh! Sparrow hawk! Okay... they are the same thing.... my neighbor has been seeing those eating the local birds... :o)

My husband says the mother is usually around, and will come to feed it---it should be okay.

Oh that's good... I found that one of my neighbors doesn't like kestrels, because they eat other birds... but this (big) little guy was so cute and he had such a big fuzzy behind! :o)

I realize this posting is pretty old, but if anyone is still reading it, kestrels don't eat birds - they feed on insects, grasshoppers, small lizards, etc..
