concord is central contra costa not eastern fyi

Since Concord gets quite hot in the summer, is it better to plant raspberries someplace where they get afternoon shade? How about blackberries?

I know for sure most thornless blackberries would be fine. Mine gets almost all day sun and doing fine as long as they're irrigated. I'm at the East Bay.

Old thread, but I'll add my 2-cents:

I'm in Concord and have had success with Caroline red raspberries although they require shade. At first I had them in a large planter as I was unsure how much light/shade; this way I could move them around until they were happy. They burned in full sun (despite plenty of water) and do best on the north side of a large shade tree, getting only afternoon sun.

I also had tried a Blackberry (sorry, forgot culivar, but it was advertised as nearly seedless) and while it grew fine for a couple years (adjacent by raspberry), it didn't produce more than one or two berries.
