I have never heard of Michelia, but looking online it seems they are related to Magnolias, but are sub-tropical plants. I would think it would be too dry for them, but if anyone would know, try Moller's nursery in Palm Desert--if it will grow in the desert, they will will have it, they have quite a large selection of beautiful plants.

Is your climate similar to Riverside? I saw a very large tree growing on the north side of a home in Riverside. It was quite large. Not too long ago they trimmed it drastically, but my gosh, it bounced back with vengeance. I am currently trying to grow one in the ground on the south side of my home. So far it's still alive. The site that you propose sounds great. Gardenia and Michelia Alba, what a great combination. Good luck to you and let us know how you do.

I am also wondering if Michelia Alba can be trimmed to form a bushy hedge? I understand banana shrub can be train that way, but not sure Alba are the same?

Kasie ~ I have done that before I posted on the CA forum. So far, not a single response. My fellow California rocks!

I saw them pruning M. Alba at the nursery. I guess it's for shape and to encourage new growth. Looks nice though. I usually go to Greenmart Nursery to get a few plant in Oct/Nov. Banana shrub is really nice, but I only wish the bloom would last more than a day though. Will you be growing you M.Alba in the ground or pot?

I am planning to plant one in pot and if they can be pruned to form hedges, then a few more in ground.
