You can try Theodore Payne but I don't think they sell cut flowers. They are in Sun Valley not far from you, but give them a call first. They are very helpful on the phone or when visiting.

Do you mean to buy cut flowers or buy plants to grow from which to cut flowers?

    Thank all,

I want to buy plants to grow cut flowers.

    Bahia,

Thank you. I have gotten San Marcos in the past but I need to update with them.

I'm mainly looking at salvias and some other things.

    Thanks a ton

There are plenty of Salvia growers but you might want to rethink using them for cutflowers. They're not the best for that purpose; they "shatter" quickly.

Tarweed Native Plants in Glendale never gets talked about much here, probably because it's a small outfit and by appointment only.

Salvia spathacea is one of the few native sages that work well as a cut flower and as it spreads by rhizomes as well as seed, it isn't impossible to establish a good section of hummingbird sage that would reliably produce blooms for cutting every spring/summer.

I'd agree with Joe that most of the native Salvia species are too messy for indoor flower arrangements; they start dropping flower parts almost immediately. For flowers that shatter, I'd recommend using them as dramatic arrangements in large vases outdoors only. Personally, I don't like flower arrangements that start making a mess the first day; but if this isn't an issue, there are plenty that are both colorful and very fragrant. Salvia clevelandii is a personal favorite.

You might also consider some of the more interesting Ribes such as R. sanguineum glutinosum which has several color forms and is in full bloom now, or things like Garrya elliptica/Silk Tassel which also has fantastic winter catkins. I'd also suggest foliage plants such as Leymus condensatus 'Canyon Prince' for the fantastic blue foliage, Toyon for the winter berries, Lyonothamnus floribundus asplenifolius for the foliage and flowers, as large grasses, shrubs or trees that also would be good in flower arrangements.

Other California native herbaceous perennials that I would highly recommend for long bloom season and beauty would include Mimulus aurantiacus, Mimulus hybrids, Galvezia speciosa, Heuchera species, and a personal favorite, Trichostema lanatum/Wooly Blue Curls.

what is the closest native plant nursery to Santa Monica? Is there a new one near the VA?

  • lynne3450

Yes, there's a new nursery new the VA - Grow Native, I think. It's run by the same folks at the nursery at Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens in Claremont. Really great native selection!

Yeah I went to Grow Native last fall and got some Penstemons for a garden I installed and they are doing great. They have a great selection.

I'd like to go to Grow Native, but its proximity scares me.

We are looking for a deer resistant (if there is such a thing...none of my deer believe such a plant exists)that is an evergreen and will provide a natural barrier hedge to our neighbors that cut down a gazillion trees to turn a beautiful natural setting into a park like setting. The Pacific Wax Myrtle is one that has come to mind. Do you have any other suggestions and or sources for this or a similar plant. I am located in Sonoma County...thanks
