Bougainvillea

Because of the thorns? Or weight of plant on wooden structures? My sons feel just as you do ... but I love them ... and keep them pruned back same as the roses. 'Thinned-out' would be a better term.

Bougainvillea doesn't come close to being a contender for worst plant because it's easy to get rid of it. If you don't want it, cut it down, dig out the rootball and it's gone. There are plenty of impossible-to-vanquish weeds that are much worse.

Among the immortal monsters in my neck of the woods, Himalayan blackberry, English ivy, pampas grass and Scotch broom are at the top of the most unwanted list. You can spend weeks exhuming every last bit of visible plant material and they will still come pack from root fragments, protected runners and dormant seeds.

When my Bougainvillea are in bloom (which is almost always) it is always the plant which gets the most comments from visitors, especially those who are not serious gardeners.

RE: Worst plant

Because it seems like I have to cut it back everyday or it pokes me in the face, and it pokes me while I'm cutting it back. Thank you for planting it right next to the only path to the house, previous tenant.

Can you just move the path? Might be easier than moving the Bougie!

You crack me up, hoovb.
They can be vicious, can't they? Maybe you can take off all of the lower sticks and just leave the top.

RE: Worst plant

The worst plant is ANY plant in the wrong place -- whether it be wrong soil, wrong sun exposure or wrong sized plot.

Old pyracanthas planted in the worst possible spot...that have to be dug out and every time you get stuck with one of the thorns it gets infected...

Bermuda grass is too evil to even be called a plant. It is the botanical equivalent of the cockroach.

i don't understand-- these plants are such bright creatures and so easy to keep up with- the best plant in the world for a dry hot spot that gets little to no water. brighten it up by doing a slow drip for 4-5 hours. the next day it will be bright and full of new blooms!

we had something called mattress vine, it twisted and grew everywhere, had to use herbicide to finally get rid of it, took us five years to get rid of it on 40 feet of chain link fencing and 6 feet high 2 feet thick.we did not plant it some neighbor planted it and it invaded our yard.another neighbor has planted passion flower vine and its starting to creep over too

oleanders. useless except for hedges if you have plenty of room and don't need to constantly prune them.
the only sign of living critters i ever saw making use of mine was a row of lacewing eggs on a leaf. never a bird perched in them.
we had to dig, pickax and then pull them out with a suv. can't compost them either. poison.

Bougys can be victims of their own success in mild warm climates. I can see that. What was a spindly gallon plant-a vine too- becomes in a few years, a thick trunked fierce thorned path blocker..and pruning works, but defeats the purpose by also taking flowering wood with it.

I LOVE my Bougainvillea!! I think I must have about twenty (should probably count). They bloom all year here and my favorite is like a little beach umbrella next to my flagstone steps with a three foot trunk and a canopy of blooms.
