Best catalogs?

| I realize this is a newbie question, but I'm posting here because of my location (zone 10 according to the zip code map - I'm in Vista, a few miles east of Oceanside). Anyway, I have room for a garden for the first time in my life and wonder if you have recommendations for catalogs/websites for plants for this area, as well as "stuff" (though funding for "stuff" is severely limited). I'm interested in growing food (tomatoes, peppers, zucchini); flowers (my taste runs toward common, cottage-y flowers like roses, daisies, and sweet peas); and tree fruit (peaches, oranges, lemons, limes). Also interested in recycling, low-cost, and non-toxic.
Thank you!

| Since there are so many really good nurseries in San Diego county, I usually don't bother with catalogs or online...shipping charges and all that. Having said that, Annie's new catalog arrived today and there are a couple of things I would like to get. I just don't feel like adding on $15 in shipping charges.....plus the size is smaller than you're going to find in a nursery locally. You also want to buy fruit trees that will do well in our low chill area.I've picked up fruit trees before at Lowe's at the end of bare root season for half price and they've been fine. In Vista you can grow sub-tropical fruits also and Exotica is a good source for that... |

| Clausens Nursery in Vista is a good place to buy citrus. Better quality and lower prices than Home Depot. Green Thumb nursery in San Marcos is a good place to buy tomato plants. They have a big selection and you can still get a good price on six packs. They probably don't have the summer vegies in yet...probably March However they usually have a good selection of bare root fruit trees starting in January...might be a few left. Also a pretty good selection of seeds. Tropic World is a little east of you and has a good selection of roses. Zeuspaul |

| Thanks so much for these great tips! I really appreciate your taking time to provide them. It's not like I NEED more catalogs arriving in my mailbox, but I do like to peruse them for ideas. I can't wait to put in a Meyer lemon, some tomatoes... It's so good to have your recommendations for specific nurseries in this area. Happy gardening! |
