what bird is eating macadamia

I have noticed there are macadamia nut shells with a hole pecked in the side and the nutmeat gone. Anyone know what area bird does that? I haven't paid much attention to the birds except to cover peach and nectarines. there are no holes or even peck marks on the fruit left on the tree, so I assume the fruit is carried off and opened on the ground. There are several feral cats that patrol the area and would attack small birds.

Why do you think it's a bird? More likely it's some kind of nut borer -- which is typically a moth larva.

Yeah, talk about a tough nut to crack. I'm not exaggerating when I say you almost need a sledge hammer. You could use them for ball bearings, once they're out of the outer coat.

I used to have this problem with my macadamia. Primary suspects were rats or ravens. Then all of a sudden a few years ago the damage stopped, though ravens are still visiting the tree. So rats were the problem.

Yep... my guess is you are having rats visit.
