For those of you living in or visiting San Diego, I wanted to let you know the San Diego Zoo offers a botanical bus tour on the third Friday each month; they call the third Friday "Plant Day". The next one is Friday 21 February; perhaps I'll see some of you there!

Here are details:
Orchid House is open for Orchid Odyssey as a part of Plant Day 10 a.m. to 2 p.m (plus select Sundays).
The botanical bus tour leaves at 2 PM from the bus tour unloading area, right of the main entrance along Front St. The horticulturist I spoke to recommended queuing about 15 minutes before.

About the plants and gardens at the San Diego Zoo:

The Gardens:
- Australian Wonders
- Bog Garden
- Bromeliad Garden
- Butterfly and Backyard Habitat Garden
- Fern Canyon
- Ginger Garden
- Hawaiian Native Plant Garden
- Lory Loop
- Madagascar Garden
- Mediterranean Garden
- My Color Garden
- Reptile Mesa
- Scripps Aviary
- Sun Bear Forest
- Terrace Lagoon
- Tiger Trail
- Tropical Fruit Grove
- Variegated Garden
- Wig L. Worm Composting Garden

About Plant Day, a blog post from 2008:
(The links to current information about Plant Day on the zoo web site were broken today. I got current information by calling the zoo horticultural office.)

About the Orchid collection:

And, as an interesting side note, the San Diego Zoo has what looks like an interesting micropropagation program:

Sounds great. What is the admission fee?

Couldn't make it today but put it on my calendar as a recurring appointment. Thanks for the reminder. I went a few years ago and it was very interesting.

Admission information

Evelyn, you can find admission details on the San Diego Zoo web site: Admission is pricey if you're going just for the bus tour, so I recommend making a day of it or getting the annual pass.

The Zoo staff and web site are strangely reticent with information about plant day. Neither the Orchid House nor the tour bus pickup spot are marked on the map or web site, and some of the volunteers are unsure of the location of either. Attached is an image showing the (current) location of both. I hope this makes it easier for first-time visitors. The left yellow arrow points to the Bus Unloading area, which is where the Botanical Bus Tour loads. The right yellow arrow points to the Orchid House, behind the meerkat habitat.
