grass or ground cover for south facing slope

I have a slope in my backyard that is south facing. It gets about half sun and half shade right now, but I plan on taking out some old trees (so it will get more sun after that.)

I put creeping red fescue sod down eight months ago and it is pretty spotty brown/dead is some parts. I seeded it in December and haven't had luck filling in the brown parts.

I'm looking to plant some kind of grass or ground cover for the rest of the slope in the backyard (this picture only shows about 1/3 of my slope). I need it to be foot traffic friendly as my kids play on the slope. It also needs to be able to take the sun all day. I plan on planting some more trees along the slope (crape myrtles, oak, magnolia little gem, pittosporum silver sheen, and some citrus trees).

Would love some suggestions. I'm in zone 10a.

Thank you!
