Can I plant these now, or should I wait?

I'm new to CA, and am in northern San Jose. We are in an apartment with only planters in a patio to garden in. Parts of it get morning-early afternoon sun, while a corner gets only bright shade. I want to have Salvia Black and Blue, Turk's Cap, Chinese Lantern, and ferns in these containers (and am open to suggestions for other small-medium plants including those for the specific type of ferns and for annuals in a couple of hanging baskets.) Does anyone have any recommendations for when I should put these in? I'll be ordering most from Almost Eden and/or Bluestone Perennials, and in my experience they arrive pretty small but are good quality so grow vigorously once the weather/planting conditions are right. I want to order only when I'm sure I'll be able to plant them within a couple of days of the order arriving. Is now a good time, or should I hold off a few more weeks?
