Pink Breath of Heaven Pruning

Near my mailbox, we have a medium sized pink breath of heaven (Coleonema) that's at least 20 years old. Some purple creeping lantana has pretty much taken over the shrub and the whole thing is woody underneath.

Since we're having this bizarre sort-of spring right now, the lantana is starting to grow.

The lantana looks nice and it's ok for it weave around the shrub, but I'd like to bring the breath of heaven back.

How hard can I prune the whole thing without killing it?

On a side note, I'd like to eventually add a clematis to the combination to drape over the mailbox. It's common to do this back east, but I don't see it too often in the Bay Area.
Comments and advice are welcome! (that's why I'm here :) )
