Planting tomatoes in 5-1-1; get dirt off roots first?

Actually, they appear to be planted in a potting mix, probably peat based. Should I wash off the mix and expose the roots completely (which sounds scary), or can I just loosen the "soil" a bit like I would if I were planting in the ground?

For tomatoes you need not, should not, bare root seedlings when planting. Tomato roots are very aggressive and will soon fill almost any size container. Al

rising the root ball is bad for the plant, it increases shock
