In my area (South OC, CA), 5-6 nearby libraries have bookstores run by volunteers. They accept used book donations, and then sell the books with the proceeds going to the library. The stores are popular; most hardbacks go for $1-2. So yard sales in my area don't have a good $ return for books. Although there are also a couple of used book stores where I could try to exchange them for credit, I usually just donate and take the tax write-off rather than try to sell them myself. Your area's circumstances may differ.

Thank you. Actually, asking $1-2 for each book at a yard sale sounds reasonable. I've gone to yard/estate sales for years and found great stuff at that price. No matter how little money we make, it will be more than nothing to help support our retirement income, and someone will get a nice book at a low price.

If you donate them to a library - or school- you can take a tax write-off equal to half the original cost of the book. When we moved I donated many of my books to the library, but found that Fresno State's Ag school greatly appreciated the gardening books. Just keep a record of what you donated and the value.
