Barberry plants in hot So Cal?

Hi all,

Went to a bunch of nurseries today and I saw a red, pillar barberry shrub. Nice looking- big thorns, and it said it grows to four feet tall, 24" wide. Does Barberry grow in hot inland valleys? I have never seen it here, but then again, most people in Simi have lawns.

It grows great here in the Napa Valley. Those thorns are what makes it so popular as a barrier to foot traffic. I like the color it adds. I prune it to keep it compact. I remove the oldest, largest growths as close to the ground as I can get. My wife can not walk by without it reaching out and scratching her. I keep it about four feet high by three feet wide. Al
