eloise_ca, thanks! We love us some kale. That 4'x4' square foot gardening bed has Maui onions, two types of garlic, leeks and spinach. As I take things out I am adding eggplant, cukes and bush beans. Here's hoping that the onions and garlic can continue on until late May to June.

I just pulled one onion today that was starting to bolt. Hope the others can hang in there. The heat and lack of rain this year is making almost everything run a little early.

Maybe you can advise: My red onions that I planted from sets back in January have lots of green, but no bulbs, and now most are bolting. What's the trick to getting them to bulb? I've got loamy soil in 4'x'4 SFG and didn't amend it much. Is there still hope or do I keep pulling and giving them away as I have been?

Someday I will grow a big red onion darnit! ;)

slowjane, onion sets don't work all that well down here in So Cal. I'm more of a sweet onion/green onion fan myself. Granex Maui onion types are my favs. I do plant some Renee's Garden delicious duo scallions. If you let them go, the red scallions will bulb up a bit.

thanks mrclint! yes, they don't tell you things like that at home depot...one of the reasons i like to shop at my local nursery. well, they certainly have made loads of green onions! ;) this fall maybe i'll try seed. i also have tons of the bulbs left from the package....i suppose it's too late to sow them and they won't save till fall...
