My neighbor has them growing wild and untended at the fence between our yards. They are the bane of my garden - I spend more time fighting back their attempts to take over my garden too, and the thorns are sharp! They bear fruit, but not enough to make the battle worthwhile.

I'm growing boysens - from some old canes that were found in my yard - which have done well for the past 2 years, and I expanded the bed this year. Just planted some thornless blackberries - which look very healthy, and appear to be holding their own - but just first year. The baba raspberry that I planted last year, has spread over a 3 x 5 ft. space, and growing nicely. I had berries on those rascals the first year after planting - so hopefully, they will be productive. One Heritage planted did not make it. I'm looking forward especially to the boysens - as these have been nursed along for a couple of years, and now have a sizable bed to give me plenty for the freezer. If the jaybirds don't decide they like them. They didn't touch them last year- I felt it was because they are quite sour when red (er green) but become dark purple when ripe. Bejay

I love the blackberries that we have in our yard. I kept them in a pot, but decided this year to risk putting them in the ground. I cut the bottom off a 20 gallon tub, sunk it into the ground, planted into it, and at the mo I have many new shoots and a few buds. The boysenberries are also doing OK. But I have a Q. I always prune my bushes back, but I noticed the boysenberries flowered better this year off of year-old canes than off of fresh shoots. Should I only prune lightly? Also, I can't get raspberries to grow. I've tried three or four times. Why do the blackberries grow like a weed, but the raspberries die?

My 2nd yr blackberry still hasnt broken dormancy! Neither have my apple or pear. Patty where do you live? If your away from the coast you may get too much heat for raspberries. Are you sure you have boysens? I thought boysens bear only on 2 yr old canes. You want to let them grow one year, fruit the next year, then chop them off. Some raspberries can fruit on first year canes at the top, then in the next spring on the bottom part of those canes. So what you should do is cut the top part of new canes after fruiting, leave the bottom part that hasnt fruited to fruit in spring.

We've just finished a complete home remodel, including all landscaping, so I've got lots of unfilled planting beds. We would love to put in some blackberries and/or raspberries. We live in Hollywood (not the hills), so not much chill, but the space I'm thinking of is pretty shady, under a large avocado (along the side of our garage). Any thoughts, recommendations, words of wisdom? Will this work? -- Patty M.

I've seen blackberries growing wild in the woods in dappled shade but I doubt they will thrive in deep shade. Remember that boysenberries (raspberry-blackberry hybrid) were grown at Knott's Berry Farm so why not Hollywood? I think blackberries are easier than raspberries here (although I've seen them grow and fruit too in Los Angeles in full sun, key is the right cultivar) but they can grow rampantly.

lol the last post was a year ago, but i hope this bumps the thread. the hill in the back yard runs along a little, 2-3" wide, 2" deep concrete ditch. the rest of the hill i plan on growing an herb garden, but between the fence and the ditch i want to plant thornless blackberries. blackberries are my favorite fruit ever, and i've wanted a blackberry plant or more ever since we would pick blackberries along the side of highway 4. does anyone kno of anyone or anyplace that is offering these plants?

When I was in Germany there were some raspberries growing wild along a path I used to hike on. I noticed the berries on the side of the bush in the sun were nice and sweet, but the berries on the shady side were sour. So if you want sweet tasting berries you need full sun.
WANTED: Blackberry: Anyone up for a Trade?
| | |
Anyone in this thread live near West LA/Santa Monica and have some hardy fertile Blackberry plant, grown organically, to trade? I have organic Pitaya(Dragon Fruit -both magenta and white flesh: does great here & the fruit is hard to find and when you can get it in the market sells for $10 a lb). Organic Bergamot & organic Aloe Vera. I will be getting Thimbleberry, Coriscan Mint, an edible Rose, + maybe a Golden-fleshed Kiwi soon & will be able to trade from those too( if you have any of these I'm interested in trading as well; I will be buying the Thimbleberry very soon probably if I don't find a trade for those soon, and maybe the Kiwi & Coriscan mint; more interested in trading for the rose). Thank you & best wishes! ~Diana

Forgot to ask: Do you all think blackberries will grow and fruit in a pot on my east facing balcony on the West LA/ Santa Monica border( near Bundy and Santa Monica Blvd)-- which only gets direct sun from early morn til 10:45am then indirect light for rest of day( less in winter). Of course the vine can trail on the balcony ledge and over it which gets direct sun for maybe a few minutes longer :) Thank you, ~Diana p.s. I used a different subject heading before, so if you miss it I just sent a post before this re trading things for a blackberry plant
