Tomatoes in Earth Boxes

Hi, I'm new to GardenWeb and new to gardening. Would like to grow tomatoes in an Earth Box. Have people had success with the Earth Box? What other vegetables have you grown with success in the Earth Box. I live in Berkeley with maybe 6 hours day of sun.

Thanks for your help!

Last year in Petaluma I grew corn, okra and peppers in home made earth boxes. I was very happy with the results. I made more boxes and have started two tomatoes in one of them. I expect good results.

You might want to search the Gardenweb Tomato forum for this topic. There were some people there who were very creative, like Bob414, growing tomatoes in different containers, including earth boxes. An "Earth boxes" search there had 41 matches.

Here is a link that might be useful: Gardenweb Tomato Forum

Earth boxes work fine for tomatoes etc (I grow papayas in mine). You can make about the same thing out of old ice chests from the thrift store.

One of those containers with a water resevoir so you don't have to water so often. If you google it, it will bring up the website.

I have grown cherry tomatoes in pots with no problems, but when I try and grow the big tomatoes they get blossom end rot.
I know its because they dry out too much in our heat and they get severe Calcium deficiency.
Green beans are great in pots, I stagger the planting so new pots start cropping as the old plants die off.
Snow Peas are great in pots as well.

Miketrees
They wont dryout in an earthbox. Just keep the 3 gallon reivour from going dry, and the mix is kept a very constant moist.
I grew two Maters in an Earthbox lastyear, they did splendidly. In the middle of the summer, it was amazing that the Maters sucked up almost the three gallons in a day

Have grown tomatoes in our homemade E. Boxes for 2 years now (3 seasons worth) and they've been spectacular! This includes heirloom tomatoes, too. Very happy with the output and ease of care. (San Diego)
