I wonder if your tree was a volunteer or grown from a seedling. It didn't sound as if your tree has been seen blooming yet; seedling loquats can be exceptionally slow to flower and produce fruit (10-13 years, and quite large in size, is not uncommon).

There are fruiting loquats near my house. The ravens like to eat the fruit and leave the hard seeds in my yard. Sometimes they sprout and are 6-8" tall before I find them tucked among my other plants (or, in at least one case, growing out of the drainage pipe grate).

There's also an ornamental loquat that does not fruit.

Just to update - We didn't get around to chopping the loquat tree. Thank goodness - just last week I just saw what looks like buds on my loquat tree. So hopefully it gives good tasting fruit or for sure it will be chopped.

I'm glad yours bloomed! I am growing a volunteer from my mom's loquat -- and I don't care if it fruits. I've had it nearly 8 years, but my oldest son (now 9yo) would always whack at it so it never exceeded 3-4 feet tall. Poor tree! But finally that has ceased, he has better self-control, and the tree is about 5 1/2 feet tall. It BLOOMED like crazy this past few weekd. Oh my heaven, I love the scent of the flowers. Even if it doesn't fruit, the leaves are so gorgeous and the flowers wonderful. I could go either way on the fruit, but my do the flowers smell nice. Brought back forgotten memories from my childhood of climbing the loquat tree!
