I've seen this tree/shrub growing near Balboa Park. I once bought one for my mother who lives in Chino Hills, Sunset Zone 19. In the winter it went into the 30's for several days, which killed the plant. I think if it's still alive, it'll probably perk up (albeit slowly) when it warms up. Also, it should become more tolerant of the cold once it matures.

Wow i just googled this as i didn't know what it was.Hope yours comes alive and does well.It's a beautiful tree and the seed pod looks like the size of an apple!!Flower is gorgeous as well.

I see now that seven branches have beautiful new deep green growth. I think Bill was right, and it got knocked back with cooler temperatures. Yeah plant!
