Blasphemy! Glazed ceramic pots are my first choice for any container planting I do, from succulents to tropicals. It's all about tailoring the soil mix to the plant preferences. I personally find black plastic nursery pots end up frying the roots of containers in full sun, plus they aren't exactly beautiful, just cheap, available and functional for production purposes, but not for display. Plus, glazed ceramic pots, especially in larger sizes, greatly minimize water use compared to anything else.

Drop the black practical ones into the pretty pots.

Palms,Cycads,Ficus,C&S from tropical lands...Plumeria too. Just a short list of what will crawl in ceramics in the bay area. And once these plants need large containers...even more is plastic an advantage. And,it seems like the better the ceramic pots quality,the more its like a perpetual "Thermos" for plant roots. That's fine and dandy for temperate's or hardy subtropical's like many Agave species.
I have seen the light!...and its plastic.

One last..just the direct comparison of seeing things languish for years in an attractive ceramic,then take off in cheap "flower bowl" plastic pot as for my Ficus palmeri is just one that pushed me off the ceramic edge-lol.

Second last...people in HOT summer climates can disregard this post.

I use plastic only for growing. Over three to sometimes five gallon size, I only use the glazed ceramic, all for long time growing and enjoying. No container is permanent, as the mix will have to be changed eventually. For this reason I look for containers with a taper to make it possible to remove the plant from the container without destroying the plant or the expensive container. Al
