plants around leach field?

We are moving out to the country, the Scotts Valley/Santa Cruz area, and will likely be on a septic system with a big chunk of the property given over to the leach field. (made an offer on a place but don't know yet if we will get it or not.)

If we get this particular place we will have a large pasture that has been pretty much ignored. Full sun but half of it is the leach field.

In my head I am envisioning a butterfly/hummingbird/pollinator garden. Although this will be my first time dealing with a septic system and leach field I do know not to put plant trees close where their roots can interfere with things. I am thinking meadow with native grasses but I am wondering what other plants (mostly CA natives) would do well in such an environment?

And if you have any links to leach field gardens, I'd love to see them too.

Thanks!
Susan
