buckwheat disease?

I live among native chaparral in Temecula. Everything is in bloom, LOTS of yellow yarrow, white and black sage and native wildflowers. I have been noticing a lot of buckwheat turning gray, and most have not flowered as yet. I have had my property for over 20 years and have never seen this before. Any ideas, anyone? A google search has been unsuccesful....

Are the plants actually dying? Have you looked closely to see if they are mildewed? This is a real mystery! The buckwheat here has bloomed, but not very nicely. I'm going to take a closer look tomorrow.

hoovb, found a couple of worm-looking things a couple of months back. They were skeletonizing a couple of plants, but they've disappeared.
Renee, the plant doesn't appear to be dying. Blossoms have formed but are not opening. Mildew was a guess of mine, also - I'm going to get my magnifying glass out tomorrow!
