Transplanting some Tiger's-eye Sumacs

Tom Ray

We live in the East Bay hills (San Leandro) overlooking the San Francisco Bay. Clay over rock soil. We've purchased some small (2+ ft) Tiger-eye Sumacs and are looking to transplant/plant them ASAP (if the right thing to do) They are just beginning to leaf. I've been clearing the ground the past couple of weekends. Should I also till the area or just dig a hole and disturb the soil around where we plant them?

Should we amend the soil? ...and if so, with what would you recommend?

I read that they are xeriscopic (or so once established) so I am expecting to water them this year and see whether they want some next. I am also concerned that the clay soil over rock is not going to drain as well as they may prefer. Is that accurate?

Anyone tending them in their gardens/hillsides in the area?
