My guess would be peony, but I am not as knowledgeable as many who contribute to this forum.

Those could be peony poppies, I have all types of similar looking, and sometimes they will not bloom if the soil is too rich, but they are not harmful. If you get sick of them, they are easy to pull up and you can compost them and get nice greens for the compost bin.

Looks daisy-like and familiar, for some reason. I'd wait for blooms. They look more like ornamentals than like weeds.

Thanks all for your thoughts. If only it were a self seeded peony! In So. Cal! I could charge admission. Believe me, I went through my peony phase. The containers, the icing. No peonies.

I know it looks a little like peony poppies, but it's way leafer, greener and not like the peony poppies I grew years ago.

More like a coneflower, for sure. That's what I was holding out for when I potted them up last fall. But they are not at all as stiff and hairy as echinacea. Daisy like? Yep. There's something familiar, and it's not acting like a weed, but rather a perennial or biennial. I'm waiting on the flowers and will keep you posted!

I think you are looking at rudbeckia triloba.

Interesting observation. I had rudbeckia triloba last year in a different location. The young seedlings there are easily recognizable as a rudbeckia. We'll have to wait and see.
