I miss Alliums

I had hundreds of Alliums in my New Jersey garden. Does anyone have any experience growing them in SoCal or other parts of California? I did a Google search on Alliums in SoCal and found a few articles and blog posts.

One person quoted in the LA Times said she felt they were not worth growing here because they only thrived in colder years but another said he was successful with A. schubertii which is a favorite of mine. And the article further suggests that A. christophii, A. sphaerocephalum, and A. ampeloprasum will work if kept dry in summer.

A blog post I found on the Getty garden says that their Alliums are chilled before they are planted.

Anyone with Allium experience in California care to give any feedback of success or failures?
