I saw that one in my internet search, Hoov, but I don't think it had the snout. (Maybe I just wasn't looking carefully enough. They weren't exactly holding still so I could study.) It was on a yellow rose. I'll go out tonight to see if there are more and will take one or two to the local nursery. I have not noticed them in the daytime, just last night.

I'll definitely be out again tonight and if necessary I'll take to the local nursery.

My guess is june bug also, probably attracted to the light color of the rose.

Yes! They are June bugs. Thanks Gyr & Vall! You saved me a trip to the nursery today.

Last night there were fewer beetles and only on the two yellow rose bushes. There is almost zero damage to the bushes, but I collected what beetles I could and will do the same tonight. Apparently the larva can feed on roots, but the bushes look good, so I'm not going to worry.

For the future: there is a spore product that you sprinkle on your yard and garden that kills the larva. It will help in your yard, but not your neighbors'. You only need you do it once.

I would actually guess that it is a Hoplia Beetle, especially if they were inside the blooms and it looked like some were mating. I had them all over my Callas this year and on my white and yellow roses, but not on any darker flowers. That's what gave them away...my understanding is that they are attracted to white or very light colored blooms and that they are seasonal.
