Help with romneya coulteri -- no new leaves

Hi, I have two new Romneya Coulteri plants in my yard and they should be doing well but they are not. I live near the bay and planted them with compost and good topsoil (beneath is clay but that was loosened up.) I just fertilized and the plant is watered every day. The location is sunny. Temps are very mild (usually 60-70F) but it is very windy where I live. Both plants show no new growth or flowering since I put them in a month ago. One of them looks like it is dying -- leaves are light brown mostly. I am mystified as to what could be going wrong. The only thing I can think of is the wind. Please help!
Thank you!

It sounds like you are watering too much. These are native plants that need little watering. I usually plant mine in the early winter and let the rains water them and maybe water once a month the first year, none thereafter. I also wouldn't fertilize them.

My Romneya are actually just starting to go dormant, turn brown and die back. The behaviour you describe is exactly what I went through my first year. I planted my Romneya in June of last year. It didn't grow at all and barely made it through the summer, but once the rains started it grew like a weed. You can find more info about my Romneya on my blog: http://natesgarden.blogspot.com

Hi, thank you for your responses. I'll just cut them back a bit, leave them alone and see what happens in the spring. I was going bananas because this plant is growing in tall thickets along the highway in the southern part of the Bay Area and at the SF Zoo, but mine are faltering...

They like the best possible drainage, sand is great. Water and fertilizer are not required or appreciated after the roots are established. They seem to thrive on nothing. Al

I have found them to be difficult transplants, and agree that they don't need much fussing to get established. You can see a picture of one that is established in my yard in the garden pictures forum. Good luck. It should make it over the next year or two in your yard if any of the root is alive. Jim

I too have read they are very touchy about being transplanted. I've been trying for two years now to kill mine off....darn suckers dove 20" and came up on the other side of my planter....

Thanks for all the replies. I couldn't do much about the watering b/c one of them is close to a sprinkler. Instead I pruned one down a lot and that one has started to show some growth from the bottom! Yay! The other one, I pruned only a little and it is only showing growth on the stems (new leaves.) I think both will end up surviving after all.

A year ago, at Al's suggestion, I moved mine to sandy loam -- from clay. These are doing extremely well this year, and the few remainders in the clay soil are now dead.

I planted MP when I first bought my house ten years ago. I planted in fall and watered it about every two weeks. The water didn't seem to hurt but then again I have sharp drainage.

Now it's eaten my garage and punched it's way up through the asphalt in my driveway and it's popping up in the planter in the front of my house. Never saw a prettier nuisance.

I've tried planting it out near the curb where it's bad behavior would be welcome but people's big feet and their dogs' pee have killed every one of them.

Hey there,
I just planted one of these in my front yard and I'm wondering if it might become too invasive. I know that some people shovel prune them and that helps control their size, but I'm wondering if I should put in a root barrier of galvanized metal. What do you guys think?

Does anyone have any romneya coulteri to share for
trades or postage? I've been looking for this beauty,
i've got a special spot all picked-out for it. Maybe
I've got something you'd like on my lists.
