My pomegranate did not start producing regularly and good amounts of fruit until about 5 years in the ground.

Blue, pomegranates usually start producing in year 2 or 3. They can produce fruit as early as the first year, but that's not as usual. Also, we've had some very cool springs and this can also affect fruit set. Nothing abnormal about your pom. Also, be sure you're not over-fertilizing with nitrogen. That will give a very lush, green pom, without much fruit set. Poms really don't need much fertilization, some folks don't fertilizer their poms at all, but just apply a nice thick layer of composted mulch once a year. If you do fertilize, you can use an 8-8-8 twice a year, early spring (March) and fall after fruits have been picked.

Thanks Patty and mikey. I guess I was overly optimistic as gardening is a relatively new venture for me since remodeling my backyard about a year ago. In addition to the Pom I planted a Lemon Guava last April and got fruit in Nov so I was thinking it is normal for fruit trees to begin fruiting right away. However more recently I planted a Valencia Orange this Jan and it got plenty of flowers and they formed into fruit so I was eagerly awaiting oranges and now it seems like they all fell off :(

I guess I need to wait. Thanks for the tip on the fert - that could be part of the problem - I bought some EB Stone Citrus and Fruit tree food for use on the Orange and then also used it on the Pom. But it is a 7-3-3 formulation which I guess may have contributed to this. Sure enough the Pom is looked very lush and green but no fruit set. I will follow Patty's advice for next year.

That's okay, blue. Your pom will have a really great start, and the good growth will help support lots of fruit next year! And as far as your orange tree, remember citrus will set far more fruit than they can eventually support, so they will drop a fair amount of small fruit. The younger the tree, the more aborted fruit. And, some types of citrus set huge amounts of fruit, only to drop fairly large numbers, as opposed to other citrus that don't set as much and drop less :-)
