9' tall screen for summer sun, full winter shade in tub

Hi everyone. Does anyone have any ideas for a shrub that I can use to fully screen a bathroom window that starts from about 5 ft. off the ground, so it could even be a small tree. The problem is it is right where all the plumbing goes into the house, so I do not want to plant something in the ground. It needs to remain dense in a large tub or planter, and be able to take 5-6 months of full shade in winter, unless the top grows tall enough to get some sun over the one story house. In the summer, it gets a lot of sun. I can give it as large a tub as needed, I'd rather leave a huge tub there indefintely.

I tried several running bamboos, but they didn't grow tall enough as quickly as I had hoped, had periods of looking ratty, needed a lot of water in summer and I lost patience and vouched not to grow bamboos in pots. Thanks for your suggestions!
