The fruitless olive tree would be a great choice.....I have 2 of them and they
don't mind the hot weather. Both are in all-day sun and don't take much water
once established. Mine are both 3 years old and I love them. Good luck' Sunnie

I don't think there are any bad choices here. It all depends on the effect you are trying to achieve. The After Dark agonis will probably give a more Mediterranean feel than the plum (Prunus Krauter Vesuvius, yes?), but are you willing to trade Mediterranean for those delightful pale pink blossoms in the early spring?

That said, I have several of these plum trees in my garden. Here in Pasadena it gets hot, crazy hot, in August and September, but Vesuvius has never crisped on me. Even at 110 degrees, which we've had more than once over the past few years.

I have the Agonis, actually I have three of them. Very graceful and beautiful with little care required. They need some attention when young from an expert arborist to ensure they form a strong structure, but after that you are essentially done. Also a very clean tree--little litter drop, and starry white flowers in spring. 20-25' tall.

Olive will get bigger than that if you let it, but they are not fast. The neighbor has one and let it go, and it towers over his two-story house (it's decades old, though).

In my opinion more trimming work on the Olive, but over the long term, not right away. Once the Agonis achieves an adult structure, not much to do. There are four mature ones down the road, and they have been untouched for years. Here's the green version, a mature specimen, slightly larger than the black version but otherwise the same:

We have decided to go with the Agonis! We are excited about it! I am going with the landscaper designer to pick out the trees on Wedesday. Should be fun!
