Sacred Flower of the Incas

One of the joys of gardening in a coastal influenced climate here in California is this too little seen plant from the cloud forests of the Andes. It is easily as adaptable to California conditions as the more commonly seen Brugmansia, but not seen as often in gardens. It can get up to 12 feet tall, but is more commonly grown as an arching shrub against a wall or fence to 6 to 8 feet tall. There are different color forms of this, and 'Hot Pants' is one that combines some vivid orange tints with the red, and Annie's Annuals has a pale yellow flowering form as well. Worth seeking out if you like tempting the hummingbirds, with a long season of bloom in spring, or off and on all year round if it likes its spot.
