Solanum is a fast grower. It can be trimmed as a shrub or a single-trunked tree. Chop at it all you want and it will grow back. Birds seem to like it, too.

Thanks folks. Yes, I was primarily trying to figure out how/when to give it a good pruning. And everything seems to indicate that I should be able to (as lgteacher so eloquently put it) chop at it all I want!

There are some varieties of that which might be toxic or poison. To what degree if just make you sick or really cause harm you might want to research that, since it looks like its near a walkway.
