The alternative bottlebrush flower

Here's a shot of another interesting South African large shrub/small tree that blooms in late winter in California. The flowering period isn't nearly as long as for a Callistemon, but the form of the plant is interesting, the foliage glossy, and the trunks develop an interesting peeling bark as they age. I've discovered that the deer really like to eat this plant, so it can't be used just anywhere, but is fairly drought tolerant once established. Very showy when in full bloom, often just after it has dropped almost all its foliage.
