Thanks for your reply. That's good to know. I have ginger elsewhere on our property that is well established and planted directly in front of two different fences and they're totally upright. Do you have a sense of why yours leaned?

Did you try staking the strongest stalks? Don't know how much/if any difference that would make. I went ahead and planted them alongside the house, and am thinking ahead to what I'll do if they begin to to lean.

When I lived in Venice, I had the best luck with ginger planted in full sun, but then we got beach fog, and it was never hot. I do not think heat is a problem if you keep them watered during the hot dry spells. The ginger that I have planted next to a wall has not done as well, but now that I am in Westchester, I think that perhaps the bad soil is part of the problem - it is very hard soil that does not drain well.

Lars - thanks for your reply. I did read that ginger needs well-draining soil - in fact, the guy who sold the plants to me suggested strongly that I buy cactus mix, which I ultimately did. I'd bet your hunch about your soil is right.

I agree about keeping them well watered during August/September, when it really heats up around here. Hopefully that's enough.
