100 feet is generally the MAXIMUM for proper pollination.

There is no minimum, however, and fruit trees can be planted a lot closer than once thought.

In fact, three or four fruit trees (of the same type and same rootstock; different cultivars) can be planted in the same hole. You can even plant most fruit trees in a "hedgerow", barely three feet apart.

I'm curious -- did the person at the nursery not tell you that you needed a pollinator?

Thanks Joe!! That chart is very helpful. No, the nursery didn't mention we needed another one to get cherries. The little tag that came with it said Royal Ann and Lambert do not pollenize Bing, and suggested Black Tartarian, Van, Rainier, Stella or Lapins. I'm glad we looked at the tag (couple weeks later) or we would have wondered why we weren't getting any cherries! The tree is pretty small, so I didn't expect any this year anyway. But, we need to get another one now!

If you don't want another tree you can graft one of the pollinizers onto the tree you have. Next January the California Rare Fruit Growers will have their scion exchange and you can get your scion wood and they will show you how to make the graft. If you are afraid to do it your self they can usually give you the name of someone to do it for you. Al

I specifically asked the lady at the local OSH about the bing and she told me that it was "self-pollinating" and that I didnt have to worry. The tag and other readings say different. There is a black cherry tree across the street. I am not sure of the variety tho. Should I risk it or just buy another tree?
