Hey everyone. Right now we're growing Beefsteak and cherry tomatoes and a few others Im not sure about ( my bf and our roommate are into the plants)... they bought some kind of hawaiian tomato, but the flowers are turning brown and falling off.. does anyone know what we should do to fix this or can they just not be grown here in southern CA... any help would be appreciated. thank you.

I don't even know the type growing in my garden. Odd thing is that I never set any tomatoe seeds and all of a sudden it showed up. Sprinkler system has been giving it water and I've done nothing other than pick the tomatoes. It's actually the only vegetable in the garden. Lots of little ping pong sized tomatoes which we've really enjoyed.

    Black 2
    Black Prince 1
    Brandywine 7
    Early Girl 6
    Husky Cherry 6
    Burpees Supersteak 7

BTW, I see two posters saying they are growing ACE. The state of California has/had it on their recommended list because its supposed to do well under low humidity conditions like we have in southern California. Any opinions on its taste, productivity, and disease resistance? I never tried it myself.

Last year I had luck with a couple of Early Girls so I thought I'd try her again. My one Early Girl has been giving us about 3 tomatoes daily for about a month.... which is just perfect for our needs.

I only grow a few tomatoes in pots. Every week I go to the farmers market and buy heirlooms. It's too cold and shady where I live for most tomatoes to do well.

We always grow Sungold cherry tomatoes. They turned my husband from a tomato-hater to a tomato-lover!

I've tried Early Girl but although it ripens here, the taste is flat and bland. Celebrity was much better but I couldn't find any plants in the garden center (I prefer container plants, since I usually only need 2-3 of them).

This year I figured since I have to grow the Sungolds from seed, I might as well try a regular tomato as well. I have 2 Burpee's Early Pick Hybrid bush tomatoes, so we'll see how they do.

This is the first year I've tried the red plastic mulch, which supposedly encourages fast growth on tomato plants. So far I've been impressed - even with our extremely cool nights and windy days, both types of tomatoes have set fruit very quickly.

I don't get the heat that toms need, so I'm trying a different mix this year.

    Ones doing great so far
    - Brandywine
    - Stupice
    - Large red cherry
    - Black Knight
    - Paul Robson
    - Mortgage lifter
    - Druzba

    So so
    - Isis Candy; very slow setting fruit, not vigorous
    - Black cherry; planted late, slow to get growing
    - SF fog; small plant, lots of fruit

    Deceased
    - Early girl; planted in March, by early June wilt killed large plant in 2 days

I was surprised to see Copia in S. Ca. I have 3 of them. They are slow to set fruit so I 0-10-10 them yesterday. The tomatos are to die for.

I also have San Marzano and it has fruit on it. I brought seed back from Italy thinking I would never find this tomato in the US and I did. They are wonderful and what was used in the sauces in Sorrento.

    Have 2 cherries. Penny

only two tomato plants this year, but they are both doing great, have been harvesting deep red fruit for about a month now.

    1. Juliet (small paste type, big bush, lots of fruit, can handle our heat)

    2. SC 100 (cherry, big bush, lots of fruit, slows during the hottest days, but does not stop)

also growing other solanums, pepino dulce, naranjilla, and cocona. No fruit yet.

    My 2007 list:
    Kellogs Breakfast
    Little Brandywine
    Brandywine
    Red Cherry
    Cherokee Purple
    Jubilee
    Jet Star
    Better Boy
    Lemon Boy
    Mortgage Lifter
    Jet Setter
    Celebrity
    Sungold
    Sweet 100
    Black Prince
    Granny Smith
    Green Zebra
    San Marzano

I planted a Caspian Pink that came down with some kind of crud so I jerked it. And I can finally say every plant has set fruit- Kellogs Breakfast and Mortgage Lifter apparently don't like the cool nights we have here- they both just set fruit this week. Cherokee Purple and Lemon Boy are both just going gangbusters.

Here's an answer (3 1/2 months late): I grew Ace two seasons ago and it produced very well for me. However, I found its taste rather mild and unassuming. In other words, it tasted ok. It's a great tomato for making salsa and putting on sandwiches, but I rarely ate it in a salad or by itself. It just wasn't exciting enough. It's pretty reliable, though. My dad grew Ace every year when I was a boy and neither of us have ever had any disease problems with the variety.

I live in a duplex (house) and the unit the owner lived in is vacant (property is bank owned now) so I am guerilla gardening the empty back yard with:

    Kellogg's Breakfast
    Lennie and Gracie's Kentucky
    Spark's Yellow
    Azoychka
    Green Zebra
    Carbon
    Rutgers

    In my own yard:
    Momotaro
    Japanese Black Trifele
Early Girl (from last year and soon to be pulled)

    In 15 gal squats:
    San Marzano
    Principe de Borghese
    Black Sea Man

Seedlings I have to squeeze in somewhere:
    Taxi
    Sweet Baby Girl
    Opalka
    Black Krim

I noticed my local nursery has much fewer varieties of heirloom tomatoes this year so I had to grow them from seed - much more fun and rewarding I'll never go back to buying plants!
