I've never been there but Bay View Greenwaste out in bayview apparently has free soil (maybe just mulch?)... Let me know if you go out there. Their website doesn't work anymore and I haven't tried calling them. Hopefully they are still open.

I'm also going to be looking for some soil in a month or two so please keep me posted on your progress!

American Soil is in Richmond and San Rafael and sells any soil you need as well as stone and other landscaping products. The have a website at www.americansoil.com and there's also Acapulco Soil and Stone. When I lived in SF I was never aware there were any soil or stone yards unless you leave town and go south or east.

Bay View Greenwaste does not answer the phone, it goes to like a voice mail, and they never hear it, and it's very much out of business.

I wanted to use them to get rid of some junky vegetation, but I would not trust soil from them, since would be made of junk that other people rejected, like bad soil, weeds and toxic things.

People still hang on to hope by giving me the phone number from time to time.

If they were open they should either pick up the phone or say the name and hours they are open on the message.

I am so sick of it all.

There is also a place in Berkeley near the marina (I think). Haven't looked into it but a workmate of mine got some mulch from them. I think it is just on the side of the road and the city drops off stuff there weekly.

American Soil and Lyngso off 101 in Redwood City are your best options. No cheap soil in SF, no cheap anything:)

Yep, Lyngso is great. Topsoil is $42/yard and you'll need a little over two yards. Or you can follow their recommendation and top it with nursery mix. If you don't have a truck you can have them deliver it.
