Inexpensive, quality soil amendment in Orange County

| Hello all -
Just wanted to share a source of soil amendment with you. I bought 15 bags (about 400 pounds) last week for $30. I raked it out into my yard (did not dig it in) and I'm very happy with the result. There is no waxy crust (like some bagged amendments I have purchased at nurseries) that prevents water from penetrating and no fly eggs hatching, like some steer manure products.
The compost is made of horse manure and raw wood shavings. The compost has a sweet smell, slightly like alfalfa and is light and just barely damp, not dry or wet clumps. No ammonia or sludge smell at all. The owner told me that he did not use any lawn waste, so no pesticide or herbicide residue. He cooks his compost in excess of 150 degrees, so no weed seeds or mushrooms have sprouted up in my yard.
What a brilliant idea: the composting facility is located in a horse stables. There was the alfalfa truck, the horses, the compost pile and me buying the end result! And the price & quality beats anything I have found in this area. I have added the link to the website with all the details.
Happy gardening!

| Hopefully they're not going much above 150 degrees in their composting, above a certain temperature it's no longer an organic process, but becomes a chemical process and the benefits of the compost are pretty much lost. --Ron |

| Please forgive my ignorance, but I have a question. Since this product has wood shavings in it, does this eliminate the need for mulch on top of the compost? Do you normally add compost, then mulch on top of it? |

| Hi sanda- I am the person who originally posted this. I put the compost down on top of my regular mulch around the end of July. It's about 4 - 6 inches thick. When I water, the water runs right through the compost layer to the soil below and the compost is acting like a mulch to keep the topsoil moist. It does work as a mulch, but due to the fine texture of the compost, it is gradually sifting past the old mulch down into the soil. So, I would not say it replaces mulch, which sits on top of the soil, but it is acting like mulch for now. But, again, due to the compost's fine texture, you may want to mulch on top of the compost with something bulkier & heavier, especially if it is very windy in your area. Hope that helps! S-mom |

Great stuff if it's anything like what I get here. I have horse people near me and I use the same stuff as well as tree service chipper truck chipped material. One word of caution. If you have heavy clay that makes deep cracks when dry, horse manure tends to tighten soil, so it may cause a problem. I have sandy soil and it is GREAT stuff for my soil. should work well with loam too. |

| Thanks for the heads-up, softmentor - I will post an update in the fall after I do my annual yard clean-up, which is the only time of the year that I actually turn any soil. I do have clay soil, so I will look for the problem that you describe. - shadowsmom |

I used 5 bags of it in July over my 15 rose bushes out front. Same thing, clay soil, alfalfa every couple of months during growing season and the horse compost as the mulch. Today I got out there to rake out the old rose leaves and then did a little iris planting. The soil is full of worms. For the end of summer I'm surprised at how many I see. The compost is good stuff and a bargain at $2. a bag. I'll be picking up some more one of these days to rebuild my veggie garden for planting the garlic next month. Mary (So. OC) |

| Another thumbs up for Serrano Soils. Matt is extremely knowledgeable and doesn't mind having his brains picked. Nice hard working guy. Good product, literally cheaper than dirt. I'm very happy with it. |
