Is Hibiscus syriacus invasive?

Purple-Sage

I once attended a gardening workshop during which one of the speakers described how Hibiscus syriacus has spread all over her yard by sprouting roots and seeds.
I love these plants, but have been hesitant to plant one since hearing this story.
Per Sunset book, the single flowered varieties produce more seeds. There are newer varieties such as 'Aphrodite', 'Diana', and 'Helene' which are sterile so they set few or no seed pods.
My question is are these sterile plants going to spread by underground roots?
Every time I see a Hibiscus in a garden, I look for sprouts and seedlings. So far I haven't seen any. Would anyone like to share their knowledge or experience with these plants?
Thank you
