Thanks, nonmember (what a funny forum name). Vitex agnus castus. Found it in my Sunset Garden book. Appreciate you jumping in so quickly to ID the tree. Just love it. The hummingbirds also love it. Worth being deciduous.

Yes the flowers are really something. But be aware that it spends way longer being bare than many deciduous plants (it is one of the very last to leaf out) and it has no fall display. So site it carefully as it will only be attractive when in bloom.

Well, it's been in this spot for about 10 years, and it is surrounded by other non-deciduous plants and trees, so it's worth the time it is bare. It's in sort of a hidden area of my yard, and when it does flower, all of a sudden you can see it. So, worth the time bare for me.

Yes, that is exactly the way to use it! And it makes a striking combination with the Bougainvillea. I see it sometimes in a spot of honor in front of someone's house...bare for six months...
